Born Jan 13 1897, Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia.2,3,4,5,8,10,12,13  (Missouri).6,7  (c1900).11  

Uke was nicknamed after the ukelele musical instrument.9  

Uke was a noted vaudeville performer.  According to a 1919 article in the Ohio State Journal, Bobby's specialty was "animal imitations ... also adept at imitating various musical instruments...".  Variety once called him a "vaudevillian known for his prowess on the ukulele."9  

On Jun 5 1918 Charles Robert Henshaw, age 21, registered for the World War I draft in St. Louis, Missouri.  He declared he was born Jan 13 1897 in Wheeling, West Virginia, his father was born in Frostburg, Maryland, and he was then residing at 1371 Union Ave., St. Louis, Missouri where he was self-employed in show business.  He declared his nearest relative was his father, James Edgar Henshaw.  He was recorded as medium height, stout, blue eyes, brown hair.3  

He married Vera Margaret VanAtta12,13 [Eva -2], about 192012,13.  Vera, daughter of Harry L. + Gertrude VanAtta, was born May 28 1899, Lima, Ohio.2,12,13,14  (Jun - 1899).15  

The following review of the musical comedy "Springtime Frivolities" was published in the "Oakland Tribune" (Oakland, California) on August 22, 1921:16

Bobby Henshaw pleases with his imitations of musical instruments and lively funmaking.  Towards the end of his act Vera Van Atta, his pretty partner, makes her appearance and proves an accomplished cornet player.

On Mar 6 1923 Charles Robert Henshaw and wife Vera Margaret Van Atta were issued a U.S. passport He declared he was born January 13 1897 in Wheeling, West Virginia and his father, Edgar James Henshaw was born in Grafton, West Virginia and was then residing in St. Louis, Missouri; Vera was born May 28 1899 in Lima, Ohio.  Bobby declared he was then residing at 1371 Union Ave., St. Louis, Missouri, occupied as a salesman; Vera's address was recorded as 1903 Jackson Blvd., Chicago, Illinois.  He declared he intended to depart Mar 31 1923 from the port of New York, sailing on board the "Majestic", intending to visit the British Isles, Germany, France, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland for the purpose of "theatrical profession".  He was recorded as age 26, 5' 5 1/2" tall, blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion, "round & full" face, "high broad" forehead, "short broad" nose.12  

On Aug 22 1923 Charles Robert Henshaw, age 26, arrived at the Port of New York (Ellis Island) on the ship S.S. Homeric, which sailed from Southampton, England on Aug 15 1923.  He declared he was married, born 13th January, 1897 in Wheeling, West Virginia, and his address in the United States was 1371 Union Ave., St. Louis, Missouri.2,17  

Bobby and Vera were shown in the 1930 census (Apr 4 1930), Riveria Ct., Malverne, Nassau County, New York:13

Henshaw, Bobby R., head-of-household, age 32, born in West Virginia; parents born in United States; first married at age 22; owned home ($14000 value); radio in home; occupation: actor, vaudeville; World War I veteran.
Henshaw, Vera, wife, age 31, born in Ohio; parents born in Ohio; first married at age 21; occupation: actress, vaudeville.
Van Atta, Gertrude, mother-in-law, age 51, born in Ohio; father born in Canada; mother born in Vermont; widow; first married at age 18.
Van Atta, Virgil, daughter [sic], male, age 28, born in Indiana; parents born in Ohio; single; occupation: actor, vaudeville; not a war veteran.

Bobby and Vera divorced about 1930.18  

On Sep 25 1933 Charles Henshaw, age 36, apparently traveling alone, arrived at the Port of New York on the ship S.S. American Trader, which sailed from London, England on Sep 15 1933.  He declared he was single, born Jan 13 1897 in Wheeling, West Virginia, and his address in the United States was 225 West 46th St., New York.2  

He then married Doris Harding, about 1935.1  Doris was born Dec 20 1910, Cambridge, Guernsey County, Ohio.2  (Jan 20 1909).2  

On Apr 27 1935 Charles Henshaw, age 38, apparently traveling alone, arrived at the Port of New York on the ship S.S. President Harding, which sailed from Southampton, England on Apr 19 1935.  He declared he was married, born Jan 13 1897 in Wheeling, West Virginia, and his address in the United States was 6220 De Longpree, Hollywood, California.2  

On Sep 17 1936 Doris Henshaw, age 26, arrived at the Port of New York on the ship S.S. Washington, which sailed from Southampton, England on Sep 10 1936.  She declared she was married, born Jan 20 1909 in Cambridge, Ohio, and her address in the United States was 6220 De Longpree, Hollywood, California.2  Traveling with her was:2

On Apr 16 1937 Charles R. Henshaw, age 39, apparently traveling alone, arrived at the Port of New York on the ship S.S. Manhattan, which sailed from "C O B H" on Apr 10 1937.  He declared he was married, born Jan 13 1897 in Wheeling, West Virginia, and his address in the United States was 6220 De Longprey Blvs., Hollywood, California.2  

On Apr 15 1939 Robert C. Henshaw, age 42, arrived at the Port of New York "via COBH" on the ship S.S. Washington, which sailed from Southampton, England on Apr 7 1939.  He declared he was married, born January 13th 1894 [sic] in Wheeling, West Virginia, and his address in the United States was 6220 Delong Street, Hollywood, California.2  Traveling with him were:2

Doris Henshaw, age 27, born December 20th 1910 in Cambridge, Ohio.
Robert Kent Henshaw, age 4, born August 23rd 1934 in Hoboken, New Jersey.

In approximately 1941 Uke began a long Australia tour, and left Doris and son Robert.1  

On Jul 10 1943 Charles Robert Henshaw arrived at the Port of New York via a TWA flight from "BWI", Greenland.  He declared his destination in the U.S. was 8 W. 40th St., New York, New York.2  

Charles Robert Henshaw died Oct 29 1969, Los Angeles County, California; age 72.5,6,7  (Coronado, San Diego County).9
