James Waldo Hinshaw

HINSHAW - James Waldo Hinshaw, known to all as "Waldo," passed away at Porter Hills on August 19, 2004 at the age of 101.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Meredith Shepard Hinshaw.  Waldo was born in Eureka, Kansas, July 11, 1903 to James Willard and Lula Robinson Hinshaw.  In 1890, his father established what became the largest nursery in Eastern Kansas.  Waldo's love of nature was with him from an early age; he worked with his father in the family business from the time he was a boy.  A high school athlete, he attended college at Kansas State, then returned to the nursery until the depression.  In 1932, Waldo and Meredith moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he took a job managing a nursery for the May Company.  Quickly developing a reputation for beautifully landscaping some of St. Louis' finest homes, Waldo soon established his own business, J.W. Hinshaw, Landscape Architect and Gardener.  Throughout his career, his work was recognized for its originality and quality.  In St. Louis, Waldo became a 32° Royal Arch Mason and a Noble of Moolah Temple of the Mystic Shrine.  He was also active in the congregation and leadership of Webster Hills Methodist Church, Webster Groves, Missouri.  After living in St. Louis for 43 years, where their son, Mark was born and raised, Waldo and Meredith returned to Eureka.  There they enjoyed 13 years of retirement in the company of lifelong friends.  In 1986, Waldo and Meredith moved to Porter Hills in Grand Rapids.  After Meredith's death in 1992, Waldo remained in independent living in their apartment until his hospitalization in July 2004.  Coming from a Quaker background and having been a member of the Church of Christ, Waldo joined the Methodist church after he and Meredith married.  In Grand Rapids, he was a regular attendee at Mayflower Congregational Church for many years.  Waldo maintained his membership in the United Methodist Church of Eureka, following with interest, the activities of the congregation in the newsletter.  An additional highlight of each week for Waldo was his reading of the Eureka Herald, discussing in depth memories of his many friends.  Waldo was well-known at Porter Hills for being the local "plant doctor," maintaining an apartment and a balcony full of plants, despite his limited eyesight, and helping others with their horticultural dilemmas.  He also was admired for his extraordinary interest in others, his cheerful outlook and his ability to remember everything, past and present.  Waldo is survived by his son, Mark Waldo Hinshaw, M.D. and his daughter-in-law, Candace Ward Hinshaw of Grand Rapids.  He also leaves grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Hinshaw Hall and her children, Hunter and Hannah of Grand Rapids; Sarah Hinshaw-Fuselier, her husband, Jacques Fuselier and their daughter, Sophie, of Austin, Texas.  A memorial service celebrating Waldo's life will be held at the Meeting House at Porter Hills, 3600 E. Fulton at 2:30 PM Tuesday, September 7, 2004.  Contributions in his memory may be made to the Shriners Hospital in care of Moolah Temple, 12545 FeeFee Road, St. Louis, Missouri 63146 or to the Porter Hills Foundation, 3600 E. Fulton, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49546.  The family is being served by Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service 4291 Cascade Rd. SE at Kenmoor, East of I-96.

Waldo's death was also noted in the "Wichita Eagle" (Wichita, Kansas) on August 28, 2004:12
