Oniel E. Estby, age 76, of Willmar, died Sunday, December 28, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, at the Calvary Lutheran Church Chapel in Willmar. Military Honors will be provided by the Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post 167 in Willmar. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Oniel Einar Estby was born November 1, 1932, in Maddock, North Dakota, the son of Clifford and Astrid (Flaskerud) Estby. His family moved to Brooten and later to Murdock, where he graduated from Murdock High School in 1950. He moved to Minneapolis and was employed at Seegers Refrigeration. On February 5, 1953, he married Patricia L. Hinshaw at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Paul.
In 1953, Oniel was drafted into the U.S Army and was stationed in France during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge in 1955, Oniel and Patricia moved to the Willmar area. He worked for Eids Refrigeration, as a self-employed appliance repairman and for Coca-Cola. He later worked as the head of maintenance at Ashwood Care Center in Willmar for 20 years, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 167 in Willmar. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, camping, and traveling in the school bus he converted to a RV. He also enjoyed working on and showing off his fathers 1939 B Allis-Chalmers tractor. Oniel loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two sons, Danny (and Joy) Estby of Parker, Colorado, and David (and Marilyn) Estby of Two Harbors; a daughter, Angela (and Ed) Ahlbrecht of Litchfield; his mother, Astrid Howson of Willmar; seven grandchildren, Michelle (and Justin) Suparat, Christine (and Dan) Rice, Steve (and Missy) Estby, Matt Estby, Andrea Estby, Andrew Ahlbrecht, and Ethan Ahlbrecht; nine great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Red.
He was preceded in death by his father; his stepfather, Clifford Howson; a daughter, Kristi Estby in 1977 and a brother, John Estby.
