John B. Henshaw, an operating engineer who helped shape Buffalo's skyline for more than a half-century, died Saturday, May 15, 2004 in his Grand Island home after a long illness.  He was 80.  During his 56 years as a member of Local 17 of the Operating Engineers, Mr. Henshaw helped build the Buffalo Skyway, the Dulski Federal Building, housing projects and the Kinzua Dam, among other area landmarks.  His son, John E. Henshaw, a retired state trooper, said his father was the oldest living member of the local operating engineers.  His father took pride in remembering his work.  "We'd be out driving, and he'd say, "John, I put up all the steel for that building,' " his son recalled.  Born in Rochester and raised in Kenmore, Mr. Henshaw moved to Grand Island in 1976, where he spent the rest of his life.  He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Disabled American Veterans.  Mr. Henshaw was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending winters in Fort Myers, Fla., with his wife of 58 years, the former Mary M. Daigler.  Survivors in addition to his wife and son include a daughter, Jacquelyn (Michael) Hogan of Clarence; a sister, Mary O'Brien of Kenmore; three grandchildren - Susan (Peter) Morrissey, Lynda (Matthew) Carver and Kelly Hogan; and two great-grandchildren - Ryan M. and Connor P. Morrissey.  Mr. Henshaw was the brother of Mary Ann O'Brien and the late Thomas M. Henshaw.  Friends may call Sunday 7-9 PM and Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the KAISER FUNERAL HOME, 1950 Whitehaven Rd., Grand Island.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Flowers gratefully declined.  Memorials may be made to The Make A Wish Foundation.

John B. Henshaw, 80, of Grand Island, passed away on May 15, 2004, after a long illness.  

The retired operating engineer was born on Nov. 20, 1923, in Rochester.  He moved to Kenmore before relocating to Grand Island in 1976.  Henshaw served with the U.S. Army during World War II, from which he became a disabled veteran.  Despite that, he was a 56-year member of the Operating Engineers Local 17, where he worked on projects including the Danny Housing Project, Sky Way, the federal building, Marine Midland Bank, Buffalo Jet Port, Rt. 219, the Kenzua Dam and area land marks.  He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and winters in Fort Meyers, Fla.  

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary (Daigler) Henshaw; a daughter, Jacquelyn (Michael) Hogan of Clarence; a son, John E. Henshaw of Grand Island; grandchildren, including Susan (Peter) Morrissey, Lynda (Matthew) Carver and Kelly Hogan; great-grandchildren, including Ryan and Connor Morrissey; and a sister, Mary O'Brien of Kenmore.  

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Tuesday, May 18, at St. Stephen's Church.  Interment in St. Stephen's Cemetery.  Arrangements were made by Kaiser Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Hogan; great-grandmother of Ryan, Connor and Erin Morrissey, Mary Claire, Matthew and Meghan Carver; sister of Cecilia (late William) Poulsen, Eleanor (late John) Fermoil and the late Vincent Daigler; daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth Daigler; dear friend Diane Bilowus.  Friends may call Tuesday 7-9 PM and Wednesday 4-8 PM at the KAISER FUNERAL HOME, 1950 Whitehaven Rd., Grand Island.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 AM at St. Stephen's Church.  Memorials may be made to St. Christopher's Outreach, 2660 Niagara Falls Blvd., Tonawanda, NY 14150.
