Illinois GRIDLEY
Charles C. Meiss, 80, of Lexington, formerly of Gridley, died at 2:43 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 1994, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington. Born Jan. 5, 1914, in Gridley to Peter and Lena Grusy Meiss, he married Evelyn Hinshaw on Sept. 10, 1936, in Gridley. She survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Connie Lindenbaum of Lexington; two sons, Leland of Demotte, Ind., and Tom of Orange, Calif.; four brothers, Elmer and Floyd, both of Gridley, Ed of Eureka and Earl of Morton; three sisters, Viola McKinley and Alyce Gilmore, both of Gridley, and Carolyn Aeschleman of Roanoke; nine grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren. Three brothers and one great-grandchild preceded him in death.
He was a supervisor at Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria for 35 years, retiring in 1976.
He was active with the Gridley Community Club and was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 746 in Bloomington.
He attended Gridley Apostolic Christian Church, where services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday. Church ministers will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Froelich Memorial Home in Gridley and one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Gridley Cemetery. Memorials may be made to his church or the American Diabetes Association.

LEXINGTON -- Evelyn E. Meiss, 88, of Lexington, formerly of Gridley, died at 5:40 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 28, 2006) at Heritage Manor, Normal. Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvert & Froelich Memorial Home, Gridley. with Pastor Rodney Tollesen officiating. Burial will follow in Gridley Cemetery, Gridley. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and one hour before the service Wednesday at the memorial home.
Evelyn was born Aug. 25, 191,8 at Hudson, a daughter of Frank and Grace (Gildersleeve) Hinshaw. She married Charles Meiss on Sep. 10, 1936. He preceded her in death September 1994.
Surviving is one daughter, Connie (John) Lindenbaum, Lexington, and two sons, LeLand (Elise) Meiss, DeMotte, Ind., and Thomas (Bonnie) Meiss, Orange, Calif. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Allan (Linda) Friedman, Todd Friedman, Kelli (Gary) Shirley, Jillaine Friedman, Murphy (Lori) Meiss, LeAnn Meiss, Paula (Larry) Baker, Mechelle (Mike) Malane, and Cindy (Jason) Johnson; four step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Her parents, two brothers, three sisters, and three great-grandchildren preceded her in death.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Lexington Ambulance or the donor's choice.
She graduated from Normal Community High School and served several years on the Gridley Library Board. She was president of the Mother's Club for Gridley School and was an assistant 4-H leader for Gridley Girls Club.
She enjoyed meeting the public and was the manager of Bean's Dry Goods store and that later became Ritters in Gridley.
Evelyn found the most joy in being with her children and grandchildren and had few hobbies, but did find camping with her husband and family to be lots of fun. She looked forward to each spring and the time to plant her trademark red and white geraniums.
She had a wit and sense of humor that followed everywhere she went and endeared her to all she met. In their courting days and married years, Evelyn and Charlie were known as the smoothest dancers around and people stopped to watch them gracefully glide at the old homecoming dances. In later years, she never passed up an invitation to go out to eat, although she continued to fry chicken in the old iron skillet for the family every chance she got. She and Charlie shared a fondness of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team that has now been handed down to the 4th generation as has the family memorabilia that she held dear over the years and all the clippings about descendants' accomplishments that she couldn't bear to part with.
She loved her family and they loved her and will miss her dearly, but share in the joy that she found when the Lord reached down and took her hand in his to lead her to her new home in heaven.
