Two Boys Injured in Collision of
Bike and Auto at City Intersection

Two boys riding on a bicycle were injured, one critically, when they coasted down a steep grade on Guinter Avenue and crashed into the right side of [a] car, at 7:05 p.m. Sunday.  It was one of three accidents reported to city police over the week-end.

Seriously injured was Robert Hanshaw, 13, son of Mrs. Ruth Green, of 1011 Calvert Avenue, who suffered a fracture of the skull and a laceration of the chin.  Hospital authorities last night stated his condition was critical.

His friend, Benjamin Crain, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Crain, of 1022 Baldwin Street, suffered contusions of the head and body injuries.  He was admitted for further observation and treatment.

Hit Moving Car

According to police, the two boys were riding on one bicycle, west on Guinter Avenue and failed to stop before entering Market Street.  Their bicycle crashed into the right front fender of a car driven by Lyle Keeler, 1723 Almond Street who was north-bound on Market Street.

Police stated there is a steep grade on Guinter Avenue as it enters Market Street, and apparently the brake on the bike failed to hold.  The avenue is between Glenwood and Hawthorne Avenues.

Mr. Keeler, after the bicycle struck his machine, swerved to the left of the road and both boys were thrown to the pavement.

The Williamsport Community Ambulance took the Hanshaw boy to the hospital and the Crain boy was taken in the Bohartz ambulance.

Damages were figured at $50 to the Hanshaw car and $25 to the Smith machine.
