James seems to have been born James Holden Tripanier, but apparently his father died when he was young, and he took his mother's Hanshaw name.  

James and brother Charles Edward Hanshaw were shown in the 1900 census (Jun 1 1900), living in a boarding house at 16 Sixth, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania:4
