He married Malissa Richards1,4 [Melissa Richards4]. Malissa was born Oct - 18452,3 [about 18471, about 185210, Dec - 18524], Arkansas2,3 [Missouri10].
Malissa was a very petite woman with brown eyes and black hair. Family rumor has it that she was Cherokee, but this has not been confirmed.11
Joseph Hinshaw died before 1880.1 Joe Hinshaw died on the way to southern Oklahoma shortly after his daughter Mary died at age 4 during the trip. Family members said he grieved himself to death. The two oldest boys, George Richard and John Madison took care of the team, cooking, and care of their mother and younger siblings. Malissa and the siblings were ill on the trip.12
