He married Elizabeth Davis^1,6 [Elizabeth H. Sprinkle^1,2,7], Jun 3 1856^1,6 [May 28 1856³], Forsyth County, North Carolina^1,6. Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Sprinkle & Elizabeth Apperson, was born Oct 23 1819, Stokes County, North Carolina.^{1,3,8,9,10,11}

Elizabeth had been previously married to William Davis⁷ (Isaac William Davis),¹ Oct 7 1839, Stokes County, North Carolina,⁷ by whom she had sons Thomas Davis (born c1842) and Eugene Davis (born c1845).⁸

Elizabeth was shown in the 1860 census (Aug 31 1860), Bethania P.O., Forsyth County, North Carolina:^8,9

Note that James was not shown with his wife and child in the 1860 census. This might indicate that he had died before 1860,¹³ however the obituary of his brother John David Hinshaw states that he was still living in North Carolina as of 1926.⁵ It is possible that James might have abandoned Elizabeth or perhaps they were legally separated or divorced.¹³

Elizabeth was again shown in the 1870 census (Jul 25 1870) living in the household of Bennett & Rebecca L. Sprinkle:^10,14

Elizabeth was again shown in the 1880 census (Jun 11 1880) still living in the household of Bennett Sprinkle:¹¹

Elizabeth died about 1889, Forsyth County, North Carolina; buried Old Wince Hunter Graveyard, Dozier, Forsyth County, North Carolina.¹
