He married Elizabeth Davis1,6 [Elizabeth H. Sprinkle1,2,7], Jun 3 18561,6 [May 28 18563], Forsyth County, North Carolina1,6.  Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Sprinkle & Elizabeth Apperson, was born Oct 23 1819, Stokes County, North Carolina.1,3,8,9,10,11  

Elizabeth had been previously married to William Davis7 (Isaac William Davis),1 Oct 7 1839, Stokes County, North Carolina,7 by whom she had sons Thomas Davis (born c1842) and Eugene Davis (born c1845).8  

Elizabeth was shown in the 1860 census (Aug 31 1860), Bethania P.O., Forsyth County, North Carolina:8,9

Elizabeth Hinshaw, age 40, born in North Carolina; $50 personal property.
James Hinshaw, age 3, born in North Carolina.
Living next door in 1860 was Elizabeth's father, Thomas Sprinkle, and in his household were Elizabeth's two Davis sons from her first marriage.8,12  

Note that James was not shown with his wife and child in the 1860 census.  This might indicate that he had died before 1860,13 however the obituary of his brother John David Hinshaw states that he was still living in North Carolina as of 1926.5  It is possible that James might have abandoned Elizabeth or perhaps they were legally separated or divorced.13  

Elizabeth was again shown in the 1870 census (Jul 25 1870) living in the household of Bennett & Rebecca L. Sprinkle:10,14

Elizabeth was again shown in the 1880 census (Jun 11 1880) still living in the household of Bennett Sprinkle:11
