She married Burton L. Johnston, Jan 5 1946, Elwood, Madison County, Indiana.3  Burton, son of William Jennings Johnston & Mildred N. Walker, was born Feb 3 1921, Elkhart, Madison County, Indiana.4

Catherine Jane Hancher died Sep 17 2014, Elkhart General Hospital, Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana; age 93.3

Catherine Jane Johnston, 93, of Elkhart, went to be with The Lord as she was surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at Elkhart General Hospital.  Catherine was born February 4, 1921 in Elwood, Indiana to Ross A. and Grace L. (Abbott) Hancher.  She married Burton L. Johnston on January 5, 1946 in Elwood, IN and just celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.  He survives along with their daughter, Judith Ann Johnston of Elkhart and their son Michael Lee and wife, Denise Johnston of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Adam M. Johnston and wife Eliza of Sarasota, FL., Travis L. and wife Tory Bard of Granger, IN, and Kara Bard and fiancée, James Armour and 10 great grandchildren.  She graduated from Elwood High School in 1938 and Indiana University in 1942.  Catherine was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elkhart, Alpha Chi Omega, and Mom's Club.  

Cathy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.  She was devoted to her family and always put others ahead of herself.  She was known for her independent strength and always used humor in dealing with life.  She loved gardening, bird watching, antiques, and at one time owned her own miniature picture business called The Calico Cottage.  

Viewing will be from 9-11AM and the memorial service will be at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman at 11 AM on Saturday, September 20, 2014.  Burial will be in the memorial garden at First Presbyterian Church.

Burton died Oct 12 2014, Elkhart Hospice House, Elkhart, Elkhart County, Indiana; age 93.4

Burton Johnston, 93, of Elkhart, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Elkhart Hospice House.  He longed to be reunited with his beautiful bride, Cathy Johnston, who passed on September 17, 2014.  

Burton was born on February 3, 1921 to William and Mildred (Walker) Johnston in Elkhart.  

He is survived by daughter, Judith Ann Johnston of Elkhart and their son Michael Lee and wife, Denise Johnston of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Adam M. Johnston and wife Eliza of Sarasota, FL., Travis L. and wife Tori Baird of Granger, IN, and Kara Baird and fiancée, James Armour and 10 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Norma Elliott and a brother, Bill Johnston.  

He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1938 and Indiana University in 1942.  He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp and the Reserves from 1943-1951.  He met the love of his life, wife, Cathy at I.U. and married her on January 5, 1946 in Elwood, and celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.  

Burt joined Miles Laboratories, Inc. in 1948 and was promoted to controller and then retired from Miles in 1979 as Assistant Treasurer.  Burt loved to serve others and was involved with the Samaritan Centers and the Elkhart Economic Development Committee.  Burt was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elkhart.  

Burt was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He was a man of great integrity.  He loved bird watching, sailing, doing crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader.
