Cyrenius Elwood Hinshaw1,6,7 [Cyrenius Eyrenius Hinshaw8, Cyrenius E. Henshaw9, Serenous Hinshaw10, Sirena Hinshaw11, Syrenus Hinshaw12, Elwood Hinshaw2,13].

Born Oct 20 18468 [Oct 2 18461,2,3,4,5,6,7,12], Indiana8.

During the Civil War, Cyrenus served in Company A, 85th Indiana Infantry, and also Company K, 33rd Indiana Infantry,9,14,15,16,17 Mustered in on Dec 24 1863; promoted to Full Corporal on Jun 1 1865; transfered from 85th Infantry to 33rd Infantry on Jun 1 1865; mustered out Jun 15 1865.9,14,15,17  On Apr 20 1864 the Indiana 85th Infantry marched out from Murfreesboro, Tennessee to join Sherman's army and took part in the advance upon and siege of Atlanta, being engaged at Resaca, Cassville, New Hope Church, Golgotha, Kolb's Farm, Kennesaw Mountain, Marietta and Peachtree Creek, and was then before Atlanta until the surrender.  At Peachtree Creek its brigade was the first to receive the charge of the enemy, though it held its position, its front being piled high with the enemy's dead and wounded.  It moved in the Savannah campaign, was engaged in the siege and capture of that city, and then on Jan 1 1865 its division was the first to cross into South Carolina, driving the enemy's cavalry before it.  It remained in the swamps near the Savannah River until February, when it joined the march through the Carolinas, and at Averasboro it was the leading regiment in the brigade's charge across an open field under terrific fire on the enemy's works, but the intrenchments were swept and many prisoners taken.  It engaged in the destruction of railroads and also in the building of roads and bridges.  At Bentonville, after moving 6 miles over roads obstructed by wagon trains, it deployed into line and aided in the success of the army.  It moved under fire into four positions during the day and aided in constructing a line of works to cover the flank.  It then moved to Goldsboro, Raleigh Richmond and Washington, and was mustered out June 12, 1865.  The recruits were transferred to the 33rd Ind. and served with that organization until its muster-out at Louisville, July 21 1865.18  Perhaps coincidentally, the 85th Indiana Infantry included a Major William T. Crawford18 (it is not known if he was closely related to Cyrenius' mother, Rachel Crofford/Crawford, or rather what is believed to have been her first marriage).

He married Susan M. Knight13,19 [Susanna M. Knight1,20, Sarah Knight13], Mar 21 187113,19, Douglass, Butler County, Kansas13,19.  Susan, daughter of - Knight & Rachel Morris, was born Mar 31 1853, North Carolina.1,2,3,4,5,21
