He declared he was born Feb 23 1880, and was then residing in Bomont, Clay County, West Virginia where he was employed in "oil field". He declared his nearest relative was Martha Samples of Bomont, Clay County, West Virginia. He was recorded as tall, medium build, blue eyes, light brown hair.⁹

Martha L. Hanshaw died Apr 12 1970, at her home, Washington County, Ohio; age 87.⁸
