Charles was apparently his mother's son from an earlier marriage to a Smith, or perhaps while his mother was unmarried, using the name Smith instead of Schmitt.⁸

Charles adopted and used the Hinshaw name⁴ (it is unknown if he was formally/legally adopted by Orlando D. Hinshaw).

Charles Smith Hinshaw died Oct 15 1965, at his home, 720 Centennial St., Muncie, Indiana; age 55.^5,6,7

Charles' obituary was published in the "Anderson Herald" (Anderson, Indiana) on Saturday, October 16, 1965⁶ (see scan below).
