John was born at a time when he would have been born as a slave. It is unknown where/how he or his family started using the Henshaw/Handshaw name, but slaves sometimes began using the surname of their previous owner (but not always - we don't know if that was true in this case). In the 1860 federal census slave schedule, only the following Henshaws/Hanshaws were shown as slave owners in Alabama:
Of those, only two showed a male slave in the 1-3 year old range: But it is possible that John might have been born after the 1860 census; the 1900 census showed his birth in 1863,2 although other records indicate a pre-1860 birth.1,4
