Born about 18371,2,3, Virginia1,2,3 [Ohio4].
According to family folklore, Rachel was full or part Shawnee Indiana5 (although she was not noted as non-white in census records).2 She was from just outside of Portsmouth, Ohio, from the part of the Ohio River settlement once known as "Shawneetown."5 Her appearance was apparently quite "full blooded."5
She married Anthony Rock, 1858, Middleport, Meigs County, Ohio.1,6 Anthony was born about 18303 [about 1825'4], New York3 [Ohio4, Germany5].
"Anthony Rock" was a made up name. According to family lore, Anthony left Germany in a hurry, since he thought he had killed another man. He fled on a boat to New Orleans. He always was on the run and looking over his shoulder. He worked his way up the Mississippi, then up the Ohio. He met and married Rachel in Middleport, Ohio.5
After they were married, Rachel and Anthony followed the rivers from the Kanawha, to the Elk, finally settling at Sandy Creek outside of Charleston, West Virginia.6 Amanda and Anthony lived at times in Ohio, Mississippi, and finally Kanawha, West Virginia.1

Rocke, Annie, daughter, age 7, born in West Virginia; parents born in Ohio.
Rocke, Emma, daughter, age 18, born in Virginia; parents born in Ohio; servant.
Anthony taught his sons carpentry and then they started a house construction business.6
Anthony Rock remained mysterious, as was Rachel. He was thought to be Jewish and never accepted Christianity. On his deathbed, his son George said to him "Father, you must repent, tell the true circumstances of your background, give us your real name and you must accept Christ as your savior". Anthony said, "Son, tend to your own business". Then he rolled over and died.5
