He married Abigail Chamness, Jan 25 1846, Orange County, North Carolina.^{6,7,8,9,10,11}  Abigail, daughter of Joseph Chamness & Hannah Pike^{1,5,10,11,12,13,14}, was born Feb 28 1825^{1,5,10,11,12,13,14} [about 1837¹⁵], North Carolina^{1,5,10,11,12,13,14}.  Abigail was the sister of Joshua Chamness who married Ann Nancy Hinshaw #2345.  

A marriage bond was recorded for Robt Hinshaw & Abigail Chamness on January 25, 1846, Orange County, North Carolina.  Joshua Chamness (probably Abigail's brother Joshua) was bondsman.¹⁶  

At Cane Creek MM on 6-6-1846, Abigail (formerly Chamness) condemned her "marriage out of unity"⁹

At Cane Creek MM on 4-1-1848, Abigail was granted a certificate to Fairfield MM, Wayne County, Indiana.⁹  

At West Grove MM (Indiana) on 8-12-1848, Abigail was received on a certificate from Cane Creek MM, North Carolina.¹⁷  

Robert and Abigail were shown in the 1850 census (Sep 26 1850), Clay Township, Wayne County, Indiana:⁵

Robert Hinshaw died Jun 16 1854, buried Fairfield Friends Cemetery (Fairfield PM), Carlos Road & Webster Road, east of Greens Fork, Clay Township, Wayne County, Indiana.^2,3,4  

Abigail remarried to John M. Cox, Mar 6 1856, Randolph County, Indiana.^18,19  

Cherry Grove MM recorded on 4-5-1856 regarding Abigail Hinshaw:²⁰

"a certificate was presented to this meeting from West Grove MM, dated 3-8-1856, but she having acknowledged her marriage contrary to discipline previous to the issuing of the certificate, this meeting declines receiving it."

At West Grove MM on 4-12-1856, Abigail Hinshaw (now Cox) was disowned for her marriage contrary to discipline.¹⁷  

White River MM recorded on 6-7-1856:²⁰

"Abigail Cox (formerly Hinshaw), West Grove MM, forwards to this a copy of disownment for marriage contrary to discipline".

At Wabash MM on 5-13-1865 John M. Cox and wife Abigail and daughter Hannah Ann Hinshaw were received on a certificate from RO White River MM.¹⁴  

At Wabash MM on 4-10-1869 John M. Cox and wife Abigail and daughter Hannah Ann Hinshaw were granted a certificate to RO White River MM.¹⁴

John remarried c1899 to a Manervia --.²¹
