On Jun 5 1917 Henry Handshaw, age 28, registered for the World War I draft in Lawrence County, Ohio. He declared he was born Nov 15 1894 in Lawrence County, Ohio, and was then residing in South Point, Ohio, a self-employed farmer, married, with a dependent wife. No previous military experience. He was recorded as medium height, medium build, grey eyes, brown hair.⁹

On Aug 27 1943 Henry R. Hanshaw, age 47, registered for the World War II draft in Chesapeake, Lawrence County, Ohio. He declared he was born Nov 15 1894 in South Point, Ohio, and was then still residing in South Point, employed "for myself - am unable to do much". He declared his relative/contact was Vira A. Hanshaw of South Point. He was recorded as 5'7" tall, 140 lbs., brown eyes, brown hair, light complextion.¹⁰

Vira's obituary was published in Ironton, Ohio on Sep 14 1944²⁰ and on Sep 17 1944.²⁰

Henry R. Hanshaw died Aug 2 1960, Penal Institution, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio; age 65.^1,7,11,19,21

According to family folklore, Henry died in an Ohio prison for the murder of his wife, Vira Alice Pennington.²² This seems to be confirmed by his death record showing that he died in a "penal institution".¹⁹
