When Jacob was but 8 years old he began working for others. "Jacob was employed by one of the district's more prosperous men, William Davis of Chestnut Hill, south of Salem, and after several years (actually he was only sixteen years of age), he married Melinda, daughter of William Davis. After this, he became a great hunter and for many years his winters were spent out with a group he hired hunting deer, wild turkey and prairie chicken. He shipped the last full carload of wild game that reached New York City. He also purchased the first breech loading shot gun in Iowa. Jacob was a kindly man and those of his grandchildren still living remember his later years spent on the farm he had 'proved on' from the government in Chestnut Hill district four miles south of Salem, Iowa. Here he developed new varieties of fruit trees, worked in his vegetable and flower garden and always he was followed about by some of his numerous grandchildren and too, there was always a favorite bird dog about his heels. He died in Feb. 1910 and is buried in the Quaker cemetery at Salem, Iowa."19
