After their marriage, William and family moved to Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, about 1848, and located in Brown Township. William became a builder and a contractor, following that occupation for many years, and erected many homes of the day in that county. He voted for the Democratic party in national as well as local affairs and was entrusted with various offices of the township, which trust he never betrayed. He was a devout member of the German Lutheran Reformed Church, and his wife was an equally devout Presbyterian. He enlisted in a Pennsylvania company during the Civil War and served from April until July 1865, but was in no battle.6
