Ivan was a World War II veteran8 (his father had been a World War I veteran).7  On Oct 31 1942 Ivan Harding, born 1922 in West Virginia, enlisted at Clarksburg West, Virginia as a private in the U.S. Army.  He declared he had a grammar school education, and was then single, without dependents.  He was recorded as 68" tall, 127 lbs.10

IVAN HARDING, of Milton, died Saturday.  Funeral 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.  Visitation from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ivan's obituary was published in the "Herald-Dispatch" (Huntington, West Virginia) on Tuesday, May 13, 2003:8

IVAN HARDING, Milton, W.Va., was born April 22, 1922, to Howard Harding and Murrlie Boggess of Sissonville.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Edith Harding, who was originally from Clay County, W.Va., his father, Howard Harding, mother, Murrlie Boggess, a very special stepmother, Sarah Milan Harding and brother, Howard Junior.  Ivan was a veteran of World War II, landed at Omaha Beach, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was there to see France liberated and the Jewish people freed from the concentration camps.  He was awarded seven battles stars for World War II, serving in the 42nd field artillery.  Ivan retired from Union Carbide at Institute, with more than 32 years of service, and earned the nickname "Pusher," as he started at Carbide pushing the broom.  He never lived down that nickname.  Ivan is survived by one son, Dale W. Harding; two grandsons, Sgt. Jeffrey Harding, serving with the 21st CTC in Afghanistan, and Darren Scott Harding of Milton; two great-grandchildren, Danielle Kimberly Harding and Darren Scott Jr.  He is also survived by three sisters, Lilly Harding of Sissonville, Dilly Campbell of Belle, W.Va., and Phyllis Mullins of Mammoth; a brother, Calvin Harding of Sissonville; and a very special caregiver, Glenn Edward Kidd of Milton.  Ivan attended Bias Chapel Church of Milton, where he loved his God and his brothers and sisters in Christ.  Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, W.Va., by Pastor Forrest Cummings.  Burial will be in Forest Memorial Park with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post #139, Milton.  Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton.
