Born Jun 14 1868, Two Rock, Sonoma County, California.4,5,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16  

Known through most of his life as simply "B.B." (or sometimes within the family as "Uncle Nett").1,2  

He married Florence Addie Colby, Jan 16 1895, Sonoma County, California.1,3  B.B.'s brother James Ney was a witness to the marriage.3  

Florence, daughter of George Jewell Colby & Mary Helen Greene1,3, was born Jan 20 18711,3 [Jan 22 1871], Waterbury, Washington County, Vermont1,3.  

Florence had attended "Professor Sweet's College" in Santa Rosa, California, and was granted a teaching credential after attending for six months.  She taught at Walker School for some time before her marriage.1  

B.B. and Florence had no children but, with the help of Florence's mother, they raised Earle Codding, the son of Florence's sister, Minnie Codding, who had died in childbirth.  In 1907 they also took in 16 year old Paul Colby Martin, Florence's other nephew, who had lost both parents and came to California to make his own way.1  

On Jun 16 1887 Bright Burnett Hinshaw was admitted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (class of 1891), attending for a short time (never graduating),1,17,18,19 then returned to the Hinshaw ranch where he operated a dairy and farmed.  In his later years he limited his efforts to the sheep - delivering lambs, supervising shearing, walking the fences and cutting thistles.  He was also involved with Arthur LeBaron at the Valley Ford Bank and, later, with the Wells Fargo branch in Petaluma.1  

In 1891 B.B. was captain of "Petaluma Emmets Rifles", Company C, 5th Infantry, California National Guard (company organized Jun 29 1869).20  B.B.'s cousin William Carter Hinshaw at one time also joined that same company.20  

B.B. had one of the first automobiles in the area and always took a great deal of pride in the fact that he had a Cadillac in the garage.  Not only a Cadillac, but a Cadillac that was never allowed to gather any dust on its surface or its interior.1  

B.B. and Florence were shown in the 1900 census (Jul 16 1900), living with his parents, Bloomfield Precinct, Sonoma County, California:5

On Jun 26 1928 Florence arrived at the Port of San Francisco on the S.S. Matsonia, having departed Jun 20 1928 from Honolulu, Hawaii.21

Florence died Jan 24 1960, Sonoma County, California; buried Cypress Hill Memorial Park, 430 Magnolia Avenue, Petaluma, Sonoma County, California.1,10,22  Florence died at the age of 89 after a long illness which followed a fall and several strokes.1  

Brite Burnett Hinshaw died May 21 1964, Sonoma County, California; buried Cypress Hill Memorial Park, 430 Magnolia Avenue, Petaluma, Sonoma County, California.1,9,10,11  

B.B. and his sister Fannie equally owned the 450 acre Hinshaw sheep ranch at 2752 Gurneville Road, where they grew hops from the 1880s until 1960.  Two other families stopped at that same time; that was the end of the hops business in Sonoma County.  In 1926 B.B. was preparing for a major trip (possibly to Hawaii) so he deeded his half of the Hinshaw ranch to his sister Fannie.  She kept the deed in her desk, unrecorded, so as not to disrespect her older brother, who she idolized.  After B.B.'s death the ranch was inherited by Fannie's grandsons, Edward and Jerrold Peterson (who had the deed recorded).  In 1976 Edward and Jerrold sold the land to Ken Martin, who had been leasing the land from B.B. when B.B. was no longer able to work the ranch.1,23
