Grace Lee Hinshaw Brown

BROWN WINSTON-SALEM - Mrs. Grace Lee Hinshaw Brown, 88, died Friday, June 4, 2010, surrounded by her loving family at Forsyth Medical Center.  The oldest of five children, she was born August 12, 1921 in Winston-Salem to Julius M. and Mina Jane Collins Hinshaw.  On August 8, 1942, she was married to Paul Edward Brown in a small ceremony in the parsonage of Christ Moravian Church.  Grace Lee and Paul were among the first members of Messiah Moravian Church where they both served in many ways.  She was a Love Feast Deiner, a member of both Boards of Elders and Trustees and was President of the Women's Fellowship.  In 1965 she was a member of the team that organized the Messiah Moravian Church Pre-School and she taught the three and four year old classes for 15 years.  Grace Lee was noted for her beautiful Advent wreaths at Christmas and the delicious vinegar pies at church functions.  Grace Lee and Paul were active members of the Camel Caravan and Airstream Travel Clubs and enjoyed traveling all over the United States and Canada.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul in 1995; a sister who died at birth, Anna Louise Hinshaw; and a grandchild, Thomas Edward Brown.  Grace Lee is survived by three children: a daughter, Paulette Brown Gardner and husband, Richard, of Huntersville, NC, and two sons: Dennis M. Brown and wife, Valarie, of Myrtle Beach, SC and Dale E. Brown and wife, Angela of Hoschton, GA.  She is also survived by seven grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as "Nanny": Christopher Gardner, Elizabeth Gardner Vaughn, Blake Brown, Austin Brown, Erin Brown, Katherine Brown Bagley, Elizabeth Brown and three great-grandchildren: Lily Ann Gardner, Evelyn Jay Gardner and Jackson Thomas Bagley; and two brothers: James E. Hinshaw and wife, Fay, and Carl M. Hinshaw and one sister, Edith Hinshaw Alldred.  The Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 7, at Messiah Moravian Church with burial to follow in Salem Moravian Graveyard.  The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Salem Funeral Home, 2599 Reynolda Road.  Memorials may be made to Messiah Moravian Church, 815 Hertford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.  Online condolences may be made through www.salemfh.com.
