Born about 1842, North Carolina.2,3,4,5  (Very probably Surry, now Yadkin, County, North Carolina).  

He married Ruth Mills, Mar 21 1861, Yadkin County, North Carolina.2,3,6  Ruth was born Mar - 1833, North Carolina.7,8,9  

A marriage bond was recorded for Solomon Hinshaw & Ruth Mills on March 16, 1861, Yadkin County, North Carolina.  They were married five days later by A. Speer, J.P.  Martin Hinshaw was recorded as a bondsman.10,11  

At Deep Creek MM on 8-2-1862, Ruth Hinshaw (formerly Mills) was disowned for her "marriage out of unity".12  

Solomon Hinshaw died Feb 11 1863, buried Deep Creek Friends Cemetery, Yadkin County, North Carolina.2,3  

Solomon was killed in a schoolhouse by Confederate Home Guard troops because he was a Union sympathizer.2,3  Jesse Virgil Dobbins and his brother William T. Dobbins were present in the schoolhouse, Jesse being accused of being the ringleader of the "Bushwackers" (draft resisters); they were the sons of Jacob Dobbins & Jane Carter, and believed to have been Solomon's first cousins.13  

After Solomon was killed, Ruth remarried on Oct 3 1866 to John McCollum.6  A marriage bond was recorded for Ruth Hinshaw & John McCollum on October 3, 1866, Yadkin County, North Carolina. They were married the very same day by R. G. Zachary, J.P.10  Ruth and John had a son, Sandy McCollum.1
