SATELLITE BEACH -- Mary Edith Hinshaw was born August 23, 1920 in High Point, N.C., to James Edgar and Sadie White Hinshaw. She graduated from High Point High School in 1937. Mary Edith met William Earl Carter of New Bern, N.C., and they were married August 4, 1942 in New York City, N.Y. Moving back to North Carolina, they started their family of three sons, William Jr., James and Richard. Mr. Carter joined the Air Force in 1943, and Mary became a military wife for 28 years. They were stationed in Tampa, Fla.; Suitland, Md., San Angelo, Texas; and Satellite Beach, Fla., with an overseas tour in Japan in 1958. While Sgt. Carter served a tour in Vietnam, Mary lived in Austin, Texas, where she worked for the I.R.S. She worked for other branches of Civil Service, including jobs at the Census Bureau, the U.S. Post Office, and at the base commissary at Patrick AFB. Mrs. Carter was a resident of Satellite Beach for 31 years, along with her beloved husband of 51 years, Sr. M/Sgt. William E. Carter, Ret., who preceded her in death in 1994. A member of the First Baptist Church of Satellite Beach, Mary was an independent lady who enjoyed reading, fishing, gardening and browsing the local garage sales. Her health began to fail late last year, and she passed away Saturday, March 31, 2001. Mrs. Carter is survived by her sons, William Earl Carter Jr., and wife, Nancy, of Raleigh, N.C., James Lynn Carter and wife, Linda, grandchildren, Jennifer Carter Kauffman and Brad Carter, and great-grandchild, Kelsey Carter, all from Pensacola, Fla.; son, Richard Michael Carter and wife, Cindy, and grandchildren, Chrissy, Carolyn and Catherine Carter, all of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret Jester and husband, Ronald; sister-in-law, Mossie Hinshaw and brother-in-law Gordon Carter, all of High Point, N.C.; and sister-in-law, Francis Carter of Manorville, N.Y.
