Andrew and his sister Elizabeth were taken as children to the Henshaw home in Leicester, Massachusetts to be educated. Their parents returned to Alabama. Andrew finished his education at Harvard.2
Andrew graduated from the University of Alabama, and in 1847 from Harvard University, where he studied Latin under William Wordsworth Longfellow and was a member of the Hasty Pudding Club, the Fly Club, the A.D. Club, Alpha Delta Phi.8
He married Mary Anderson "Polly" Isbell9, Aug 18 18489 [Aug 8 18481,2,3,6,8], Willow Banks, Virginia9. Mary, daughter of James Isbell & Mary Daniel Montague3,8, was born Nov 27 18243,8 [about 18304], Cumberland County, Virginia3,8. Andrew and Mary were first cousins.2,3
Marriage performed by Rev. Olcott Bulkley; marriage reported in the "Richmond Whig & Public Advertiser" (Richmond, Virginia) on Friday, August 25, 1848.9
Andrew was shown in the 1850 census living in the home of his parents in Clarke County, Alabama; his wife Mary was not shown:7

In 1851 Andrew served in the Alabama legislature.8
Andrew and family moved to Claiborne, Alabama on the death of his sister Elizabeth to help care for her three surviving children.2
Andrew and family were shown in the 1860 census (Sep 17 1860), residing with the family of his deceased sister Elizabeth in Monroe County, Alabama:4

During the Civil War Union troops took over the family home in Claiborne and used it as a hospital. They vandalized the property and stole the silver and food (most of the silver had been buried, however, and remains in the family possession). They molested the female servants of neighbors, but the Torrey/Henshaw servants were not harmed. Polly, always the proverbial southern lady, continued to care for the sick and wounded confederate soldiers who remained after the eventual retreat of the Union troops.2
During the Civil War Andrew served as a private in Captain E. Mills Company, Monroe County Militia (Home Guard). On the muster roll of Sep 12 1864 he was listed as age 37, occupation: farmer.11
Andrew Isbell Henshaw died Aug 23 1865.8
After Andrew died, Mary remarried Feb 3 1869 in Monroe County, Alabama to Rufus Campbell Torrey,3,12 widower of Andrew's sister Elizabeth.3
Mary died May 31 1901, Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama; buried Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama.8
