GREENSBORO -- Robert Lee McKoin, 86, of Greensboro passed away on February 21, 2013. Robert was born on September 22, 1926 in Winston Salem, NC to the late Carrie Mae Hodgin McKoin and Charles Clayton McKoin. His childhood was pleasantly spent in Thomasville at the Baptist Children's Home where his father was the superintendent. He graduated from Thomasville High School where he played his favorite game, football. Robert joined the Merchant Marines and traveled the world by ship.
He married his devoted wife, Colleen Hinshaw on August 30, 1947. They spent 65 wonderful years together.
Robert worked for Exxon/Mobil Corporation for 30 years and retired as a terminal superintendent in 1985. After retirement, he devoted his time to community service. He was a member of the Civitan Club and was named Civitan of the Year for three years. He also was an active member of Exxon Annuity Club.
Robert was a man of integrity who held a strong belief in God. He was a founding member of Guilford College United Methodist Church and was involved with many activities and committee positions of the church.
The McKoin family gives special thanks to the caregivers at Vera Springs Assisted Living Center who gave him smiles and loving care for the past year.
Robert is survived by his wife, Colleen Hinshaw McKoin, son, Robert Lee McKoin, Jr. and his wife Dorothy of Sebastopol, CA, daughters, Phyllis Collins and her husband, Doug of Greenwood, SC, and Emily McCall, and her husband Robert of Marshville, NC. Robert dearly loved his seven grandchildren, Carolyn Collins Thompson (Kyle), Brent Collins (Megan), Kelly McKoin, Kristen McKoin, Rachel McCall, Rebecca McCall, and Celia McCall; and his new great-grandson, Tyler Thompson.
Visitation will be on Sunday, February 24 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home on Friendly Avenue. The funeral will be Monday, February 25 at 11 a.m. at Guilford College United Methodist Church. Graveside will follow at the New Garden Friends Cemetery.
