Born 17961,5,6,7,8,9, New York1,5,6,7,8,9 [Canada10].  

He married Julia Ann Strope.2,3  Julia, daughter of Isaac Strope & Lucy Wheeler, was born about 1804, Pennsylvania.7,11  

William reported fought in the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848.12  

William and family were shown in the 1850 census (Nov 5 1850), Tippecanoe Township, Henry County, Iowa, as follows:1

Isaac Henshaw, age 29, born in New York; farmer; $1,000 real estate.

William and Julia were shown in the 1860 census (Jun 11 1860), Mount Pleasant Township, Henry County, Iowa:7

Julia Henshaw, age 56, born in Pennsylvania.

During the Civil War, William served in the Thirty-Seventh Iowa Volunteer Infantry.  He was appointed captain of Company 'H' on Sep 2 1862, mustered Nov 15 1862; mustered out May 24 1865, Davenport, Iowa.6  Although William was in his 60s at the start of the Civil War, he still raised a company of old men, for whom he was their captain, and they fought throughout the war.  The company was known as "The Gray Beards".12  

He then married Martha Boley.8,9,13  Martha was born about 18169,14 [about 181315], Indiana9,14 [Virginia8, Iowa15].  Martha was the widow of James Boley who had died of Cholera in Lee County, Iowa in 1855.13,15  

William and Martha were shown in the 1870 census (Jun 20 1870), Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa, where he was operating a hotel8 (which appears to have been owned by his second wife, Martha):16

In January, 1873, William was granted a monthly pension of $8.00 as a survivor of the War of 1812.17  

William moved to Elk County, Kansas sometime before 1880.10,17  

William was shown in the 1880 census (Jun 9 1880), living in (or visiting with) the household of son Isaac, Union Center Township, Elk County, Kansas:10

William was doubly-enumerated in the 1880 census, as William and Martha were also shown (Jun 19 1880) living in Pleasant Township, Appanoose County, Iowa:9

Henshaw, Martha, wife, age 64, born in Indiana; parents born in Virginia; keeping boarders.
Boley, J.A. J[r?]., step son, age 40, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in New York [sic]; single; day laborer; unemployed 3 months during the year.

William Henshaw was shown in the 1883 List of Pensioners of Western Park, Elk County, Kansas.17  

William Henshaw died 1884, Kansas; buried Howard Cemetery, Howard, Elk County, Kansas.5,11
