Born Feb 25 1897, 7:00 AM, at College St. and N. Broadway, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.1,2,3,5,6,7,8
When Russell was two days old, the house caught on fire, even partly burning Russell's bed, but he was rescued before being injured. It is said that it was the shock of this event that caused the death of Russell's mother a few months later on Jun 8 1897.1,2
After the death of his mother, Russell's father Holmes took him to live with his grandparents, Marion and Emily Henshaw of Goddard, Kansas. Russell's grandparents raised and educated him in Kansas.1
During World War I, Russell enlisted in the army on Jun 1 1917. He was sent to France.2,3
Russell was shown in the 1920 census (Jan 14 1920), living alone at 236 South Flower (in what seems to have been a large apartment building or similar), Los Angeles, California:8
Henshaw, Russell, head-of-household, age 22, born in California; father born in West Virginia; mother born in California; single; rented home; occupation: clerk, rail road.
He married Vivienne May Watson, Oct 9 1921, Denver, Denver County, Colorado.1,3 Vivienne, daughter of David W. Watson & Edith Rogers, was born Feb 11 1902, Cripple Creek, Colorado.2,3,5
In the early 1920s, Russell and family lived on an egg ranch on Rosecrans Blvd. in Hawthorne, California (near a small private airport called Mines Field, which is today Los Angeles International Airport). Russell was employed in the nearby oil fields and did shift work.9
Russell and family were shown in the 1930 census (Apr 1930), 825 E. Manson [unclear] Drive, Inglewood, Los Angeles County, California:3
Henshaw, Russell H., head-of-household, age 33, born in California; father born in West Virginia; mother born in California; first married at age 24; owned home ($5000 value); occupation: clerk, railroad; World War I veteran.
Henshaw, Vivienne M., wife, age 26, born in Colorado; father born in Michigan; mother born in Colorado; first married at age 18.
Henshaw, Roger L., son, age 6, born in California; father born in California; mother born in Colorado; attended school.

Watson, David W., father-in-law, age 64, born in Michigan; parents born in Scotland; widower; occupation: elevator constructor, public buildings.
During the depression years Russell was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad. They had rented-out their house in Hawthorne, but because of the depression the tenant was unable to pay his rent, so Russel was unable to pay the taxes. When the tax bill came due, Vivienne went to city hall and signed the deed over to the city.9
In 1936 the family moved to Hollywood and spent two years living there.9
In the summer of 1941 the family moved to Needle, California, when Russell was promoted to Chief Clerk to the Superintendent of the Santa Fe Railroad.9
