Charles had been previously married to Joeanner's sister, Eliza J. Hinshaw, who died in 1912 and by whom he had seven children.

He declared his nearest relative was Joanna Marris of Swaim. He was recorded as tall, medium build, blue eyes, dark brown hair.ⁱ
