James' mother remarried to a Stubbs and apparently James sometimes used the Stubbs name.  James applied for a Civil War pension under the name James Stubbs.5  

Born Nov 13 18411,5 [about 18342,3], Liverpool, Lancashire1,5.  

James was raised in Liverpool where he served an apprenticeship of seven years as machinist.1  In 1857 he came to the United States and settled at Albany, New York, where he followed his trade.1,5  

On the breakout of the Civil War, on Oct 23 1861, James (as James H. Stubbs), age 21,9 enlisted at Albany for three months service1 as a private in Company A, 25th New York State Militia.5,6,8,9  He re-enlisted on Jan 10 1862 for three years in the New York Cavalry,1,9 Company M, 3rd Regiment;5,6,8,9 discharged Feb 14 1862;9 on Apr 1 1862 transferred to Company G, 1st New Jersey Cavalry.5,6,8  On Feb 15 1863 he was promoted to corporal, then to sergeant.5  He was injured near Brandy Station, Virginia when his horse was shot and fell on him.5  Discharged Oct 4 1864;5 mustered out Jul 24 1865.9  Noted for distinguished service.9  

After leaving the army, he was employed at John A. Griswold & Company, in Troy, New York, in various positions - machinist, foreman, master mechanic, night superintendent, and assistant superintendent.5  

He married Frances S. Gardner, Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey.1,5  Frances, daughter of John Gardner & Gertrude Hellabrandt2,3,10, was born Nov 23 18422,3,10 [about 18484, Nov - 185011], New York2,3,10 [England11].  

He then continued his trade at Albany for a year; thence he went to Troy, and worked for the Albany Rensselaer Steel Company eleven years.  He then accepted the superintendency of the Carondelet Iron Mills, at St. Louis, Mo., for a year, when he resigned and returned to Troy, where he worked at the iron business two years.1

James and family were again shown in the 1880 census (Jun 2 1880), Jefferson Street, Troy, Rensselaer County, New York:3

Henshaw, Chauncey, son, age 21, born in New York; father born in England; mother born in New York; moulders apprentice.

Henshaw, James, son, age 12, born in New York; father born in England; mother born in New York; attended school.
Gardner, Gertrude, mother-in-law, age 80, born in New York; parents born in New York; widow.

In June 1880, in Illinois, James Henshaw applied for a pension as an invalid veteran of Company M, 3rd New York Cavalry and Company A, 25th New York [militia] and Company G, 1st New Jersey Cavalry.6  

James moved to South Chicago (now Chicago), Cook County, Illinois, on December 11, 1880,1 working at the steel mills of the North Chicago Rolling Mill Company,5 and assisted to place the machinery of the converting works department of the rolling mill, where iron is converted into Bessemer steel.1  In 1885 he joined the Union Steel Company in Chicago as superintendent.5  

In 1886 James suffered a paralyzing stroke in the Union Steel Company's mill, and he then moved to England to recover, where he remained until his death.5  

Frances was shown in the 1900 census (Jun 2 1900), living in the household of son James, 3541 South Marshfield Ave., Chicago, Illinois:11

Henshaw, Frances, mother, age 49, born Nov 1850 in England; parents born in England; widow, married 3 years; 3 children, 3 living.

James Henshaw died Mar 23 1908, Liverpool, Lancashire; buried Toxteth Park Cemetery, Smithdown Road, Liverpool, Lancashire.5  

In 1908, in Illinois, Frances H. Stubbs applied for a pension as widow of James H. Stubbs, alias James Henshaw, veteran of Company M, 3rd New York Cavalry and Company A, 25th New York [militia] and Company G, 1st New Jersey Cavalry.6  

Widow Frances was shown in the 1910 census (Apr 15 1910), living in the household of son James, 5325 South Wood Street, Chicago, Illinois:4

Henshaw, Mrs. Frances S., mother, age 62, born in Albany, New York; parents born in England; widow; 3 children, 3 living; occupation: home work.

Frances died Apr 22 1919, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois; age 76.5,12  Illinois death certificate #6012972.10,12,13
