Robert Sandford Hinshaw died Feb 18 1988, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.4,9
Robert retired from United States Air Force with rank of Major.1
Robert had been a volunteer to test survival equipment for the Air Force in the chilly waters of the Bering Strait off the Alaska coast. After many hours in the waters he was brought out to see how he fared. A newspaper reporter asked him what he thought of the experiment. He replied, "It will never replace poker as a pastime."1
Robert was sent to Vietnam three different times as a pilot of a refueling tanker plane. He would meet the fighter pilots in the air and refuel their planes. He was not supposed to get over enemy fire. But once he heard a pilot's distress call and the pilot was radioing that he did not have enough fuel to make it to the refueling plane. Robert couldn't stand to think of one of our pilots going down when he was near enough to save him, so he flew to the pilot and refueled his plane. When he was back on the ground he received an official reprimand but that night in the bunk house where all the pilots stayed they threw a huge party for Robert to thank him for caring enough to save one of their own.1
Bob liked to fish, hunt, play golf, and "shoot the breeze". His repertoire of amusing stories and jokes could keep anyone entertained for hours, and often did!1
At the time of his death Robert was Senior Vice President of Executive Jet Aviation in Columbus, Ohio. He was also past chairman of the board of the National Air Transportaion Association. He was a member of the National Business Aircraft Association and the Retired Officers Association. He received awards and honors including the Air Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star with the Oak Leaf Cluster, the National Defense Sevice Medal, the Armed Froces Expeditionary Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.1
