Bert L. Hinshaw, from Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois, served as a Private during the Spanish-American war. He joined Troop B, First Illinois Cavalry, one of two state militia companies from Bloomington. The troop left Bloomington on April 27, 1898 and was mustered-in in Springfield, then sent to Camp Thomas, Chickamauga Park, Georgia, preparing to be shipped-out to Cuba. They never saw any action however, since the war ended before they could ship-out. They remained at Camp Thomas until August 26, moved to Fort Sheridan, Ill., were given 30 days furlough, and were mustered-out on October 11, 1898.8,9
He married Emma Koss, Dec 25 1900, Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois.1,3 Emma was born Nov 10 1882.1
He then married Fern M. Doty2,4,10 [Mabel Fern Doty3], about 19172,4,10. Fern, daughter of Henry Doty & Effie M. Sackett, was born Oct 13 1889, Illinois.2,3,10,11,12
On Apr 8 1918, Bert L. Hinshaw applied for a pension as an invalid, veteran of Company B, 1st Illinois Cavalry.13
