Darlene Severin

GIBSON CITY -- Darlene Severin, 86, of Gibson City, formerly of Toluca, died at 6:10 p.m. Monday, April 27, 2009, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Gibson City.  

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Calvert & Froelich Memorial Home, El Paso, with Rev. Kevin Boesen officiating.  Burial will follow in Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, Wenona.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to services Saturday at the memorial home.  

Memorials may be made to the Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Gibson City, or to the charity of the donor's choice.  

Darlene was born Oct. 26, 1922, in Normal, the daughter of Ira O. and Estella Smith Hinshaw.  She married Clinton K. Baxter on Oct. 13, 1944, in LaSalle.  He died in June of 1987.  She later married Gilbert A. Severin on March 25, 1989, in Toluca.  He died on April 2, 1998.  

She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Ferne Hardt, Bernice Hinshaw and Genevieve Campbell; a brother, Wilbur Hinshaw; and a niece, Donna Likins.  

She is survived by two nieces, Norma Patterson of Gibson City and Mary Zink of Titusville, Fla.  

Darlene graduated from Cropsey High School as valedictorian of her class.  She earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Illinois State University.  She taught school for 31 years starting in Dana High School.  She also taught in the elementary schools of Streator and Benson.  

Darlene enjoyed traveling and had visited many states including Alaska, California and New York.  She also had visited many foreign countries including China, Greece, Spain, England and France.
