Margaret had been previously married in 1837 to an Achille Berard2

In 1849 Margaret's father, John Marsh, sold his interest in his sugar plantation, Petite Anse Island Plantation (later known as Avery Island), to two of his sons-in-law, Daniel Dudley Avery and Ashbel Burnham Henshaw (John Marsh eventually returned to New Jersey and died there in 1857). In 1854 Avery bought out Ashbel's interest in the plantation for $40,000.7,8 The plantation eventually became the foundation for the McIlhenny Company through Daniel Dudley Avery's son-in-law, Tabasco inventor Edmund McIlhenny11 (who married Daniel's daughter Mary Elizabeth Avery).8

He then married Elizabeth French, Sep 10 1857, Concordia Parish, Louisiana.19,20 Elizabeth was born about 1820, Louisiana.3 Elizabeth had apparently been previously married to a -- French3,20 and had three children.3
