During the Civil War, Richmond served as a corporal in Tompkins' Battery, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery.10 Enlisted as a private on Apr 17 1861; mustered out Aug 6 1861.11 On Nov 1 1861 Richmond Henshaw enlisted in Binghamton, New York as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 16th Regiment, New York Light Artillery; resigned Apr 1862.11
