Fred Emerson Hinshaw

Born Dec 14 1922, in the family tent home, Encino, Los Angeles County, California.^1,2,3,4 Fred was born in the tent his parents called home before they purchased their first 2-room house.¹

Fred attended schools in Encino and North Hollywood. After the family in 1937 returned to Indiana, in 1940 Fred graduated from Pittsboro High School.¹

He married Mabel Lucille Sallee¹ [Lucille Sallee¹], Mar 23 1941¹, Clermont, Marion County, Indiana¹. Mabel, daughter of Otis Sallee & Ova Elmore, was born Jun 30 1922, Pittsboro, Hendricks County, Indiana.¹

During World War II, Fred served 1943-45 as a radioman on ship in the Pacific. Later he operated a cafe in Pittsboro; worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio; at Jefferson Proving Grounds in Indiana; then with U.S. Agency for International Development in Rabat, Morocco (1957-60), Vietnam (1960-64), Thailand (1964-71), and Monrovia (1971-72).¹

Fred and Lucille were divorced Jan 9 1950 while they were living in an apartment at the home of Fred's parents near Fairborn, Ohio.¹ Lucille took the children back to Pittsboro where she raised them with financial support from Fred. She later remarried to Ross Penn.^1,5,6 Mabel died Jul 7 2008, Westside Retirement Village, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana; buried Lincoln Memory Gardens, Whitestone, Marion County, Indiana.^5,6

He then married Tyree Laverne (Salyer) Flowers^1,7 [Tyree Laverne Salyer^1,7], Feb 4 1950^1,7, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio^1,7. Tyree, daughter of Samuel Tyre "Sambo" Salyer & Lillian "Sally" Wigginton, was born Aug 3 1922, Kentucky.⁸

Tyree had been previously married to Lt. James Franklin Flowers, Jr.; with whom she had a daughter, Jane Tee Flowers.^1,7,8

Fred and Tyree were divorced Dec 31 1963, Reno, Nevada.^1,7 The following article was published in the "Nevada State Journal" (Reno, Nevada) on January 2, 1964:⁹

After the divorce, Tyree lived for several years near Upton, Kentucky, north of Mammouth Cave, on a small farm Fred bought for her. She later moved to Pall Mall (Jamestown), Tennessee,^1,10 then finally in 1996 to Louisburg, North Carolina.^1,11 Tyree died Mar 23 2014, near Bardstown, Kentucky; age 91.⁸ Tyree's obituary was published in "The Courier-Journal" (Louisville, Kentucky) on April 6, 2014:⁸

He then married Ellen Elaine Fox, Jan 11 1964, possibly in Saigon (aka Ho Chi Min City), Vietnam.¹ Ellen, daughter of Winnifred J. Fox, was born Apr 17 1922.^1,2 Ellen had served with Fred at the U.S. Agency for International Development in Saigon.¹

Fred Emerson Hinshaw died Oct 14 1980, Palm Springs, Riverside County, California; age 57.^1,2,4 Medical: Fred died from a heart attack.^1,12

In 1980 Ellen was living in Cathedral City, California.¹ Ellen later lived in Sun City, Arizona.¹³

Ellen died Jan 9 2001, at a retirement center in Peoria, Maricopa County, Arizona; cremated and interred at Carl Junction Cemetery, Missouri.^2,5 Ellen died of a heart attack.⁵
