Leslie taught school in Haysville, Kansas in the 1920s; Birdean taught grade school. In 1935 the family moved to Denver, Colorado. Leslie worked a number of jobs, one for a bakery company, and finally was a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office for nearly 30 years.3,11,12 After Leslie & Birdean retired, 1972 they moved to Meeker, Colorado.11,12
Leslie was an expert fly fisherman;3,11 he tied his own flies and sold them to others; he also made bamboo rods.11 He was a lifelong member of the Friends church,3 and was a quiet, godly man.11
Birdean was known for her fiesty spirit, her green thumbs, and her needlework. She always kept a garden and could make any sick plant healthy. Every window and flat surface in her house had a plant growing on it. In The Garden was one of her favorite hymns and that should not surprise anyone.12
