Alfred was murdered, killed by a rifle shot from a Bob Thompson.9 The Lassen County, California Coroner held an inquest into his death, reporting the following:9

County of LassenIn the matter of the Inquisition upon the body of Alfred S Hinshaw, deceased, before David E Endenholm, Coroner.
We, the undersigned jurors summoned to appear before David E Edenholm, Cororner of the County of Lassen, at Westwood, on the 11 day of August 1932 to inquire into the cause of death of Alfred S Hinshaw, having been sworn according to law, and having made such inquisition, after inspecting the body, and hearing the testimony adduced, upon our oaths, each and all do say, that we find the deceased was named Alfred S Hinshaw, that he was a native of Kansas, aged about 42 years and that he came to his death on the 11 day of August 1932, in this county, by shock resulting from a wound inflicted by a bullet fired from a rifle by Mr. Bob Thompson in the lobby of the Westwood Club Newstand approximately 7:45pm August 10, 1932. Homicide.
All of which we certify by this inquisition, in writing, by us signed, this eleventh day of August 1932.

Makes ArrestWestwood, Cal., Aug. 12. -- Running amok during a drunken orgy, Bob Thompson, lumberjack and mining man, was taken to the Lassen county jail at Susanville today as a result of shooting and killing one man, dangerously wounding another and terrorizing this lumber town.
Thompson appeared at the Westwood Club with a 30-30 caliber rifle and opened fire on Deputy Constable Neil Merrill, who dodged but was struck in his arm, the bullet nearly severing it. The bullet glanced and struck Alfred E. Hinshaw, who was fatally wounded.
Fires at Girl The killer made an unsuccessful attempt to commit suicide but failed and then he turned his gon [sic] on Miss J. Almeda, waitress. The shot went wild.
He entered the Westwood Club, a crowded place, which has a lunch counter, barber shop, pool tables, library and recreation for the hundreds of Red River Lumber Company employes. After eating he refused to pay.
Merrill, who in the past had often put Thompson to bed at his home or when necessary in jail, when he was intoxicated, told Thompson to go home. The officer and others believed that Thompson would readily pay for the meal the next day when the effects of the liquor was gone.
Enters and Shoots Instead, he returned with the heavy caliber rifle. He fired almost as he entered, the officer hardly realizing he was the object of a murderous attack. He was wounded before he had time to draw his own weapon.
After the second shot went wild, Thompson placed the rifle beneath his chin. His injured shoulder, for which he had been drawing compensation, prevented him from reaching the trigger. Apparently changing his mind he directed his fury against the waitress who had served him. He fired and missed.
Overpowered by Officer Constable Jim Small, attracted by the shooting and fleeing men, came on the run. He rushed Thompson, twisting the gun from him. Thompson then meekly submitted to arrest, all fight and fury gone.
Hinshaw was taken to the hospital, where he died yesterday.
Thompson had been in Westwood for the past nine years. While he drank heavy at times, he had never been regarded as dangerous or had never been involved in serious trouble.
Merrill's wound is serious.
Alfred's death was also noted in the "Lassen Advocate" (Susanville, Lassen County, California) on Sunday, August 12, 1832,14 and in the "Lassen Mail" (Susanville, Lassen County, California) on August 12, 1832,15 and in the "Westwood Sugar Pine" (Westwood, Lassen County, California) on August 15, 1832,16 and in the "Big Valley Gazette" (Bieber, Lassen County, California) on August 18, 1832.17

THOMPSON PLEADS
AT DEATH TRIALSUSANVILLE, Cal., Oct. 19 -- (Special) -- Bob Thompson, charged with the murder of Alfred Henshaw, pleaded guilty to second degree murder in court here yesterday morning.
A jury of two women and ten men had been selected to try Thompson, who shot and killed Henshaw on August 10, at the Westwood club, when he intended to kill Deputy Sheriff Neil Merrill.
Merrill received a bad wound in his arm, from which he has only recently recovered.

SLAYER INSANE
JURORS DECREESUSANVILLE, Cal., Oct. 24 -- (Special) -- The jury in the case of Bob Thompson returned a verdict Saturday of "not guilty of murder by reason of insanity."
Thompson was on trial for the murder of Alfred Henshaw at the Westwood Club August 10, when he shot Deputy Sheriff Neil Merrill, wounding the deputy in the arm. The bullet entered the thigh of Henshaw and he died a few hours later in the Westwood hospital.
Dr. T. H. Stecl and Dr. P. A. Cushman of the medical staff of the state hospital were called here to examine Thompson and their testimony was that Thompson was sane when they talked with him Friday.
Judge H. D. Burroughs instructed the jury that they were only to consider the examiner's verdict.
Thompson will be taken to Napa.
