Hurchel served his country in World War II as a corporal in the Mechanized Cavalry. He worked on Jeeps in the motor pool; he was a talented mechanic. He was in the Battle of the Bulge. He also taught himself how to cut hair and served as a barber to men in his outfit.1
He was fascinated with watches and taught himself how to repair them. He was soon fixing watches for fellow soldiers and some of the "big brass". When he got out of the service he went to work for Cogbil Jewelry store in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas. He talked the owner's son, Leonard, into setting up a location at 116 Main Street in North Little Rock, and letting him run the business. It was known as H.C. Jewelry Co. He soon bought out Mr. Cogbil. After quite a few years, there was a fire that burned down almost the entire block on Thanksgiving Day. He moved the business around the corner onto Washington Ave., temporarily, until the new Park Plaza Mall opened. He was one of the original tenants of the new mall. He opened a small jewelry and watch repair business. He became quite well known for being able to fix old clocks and watches. Sometimes he fabricated new parts for them.1
Ivy died Aug 4 1995, Pulaski County, Arkansas; buried Spring Valley Cemetery, Ferndale, Pulaski County, Arkansas.1,3,11,12
In 1998 Hurchel was still living in Little Rock, Arkansas.3
