James Starr "Buck" Hinshaw

James Starr Buck Hinshaw was born June 11, 1929 below the Roubidoux Bridge on Hwy 17 near the Hinshaw Eddy on old Fort Leonard Wood.  He was one of eight children born to the union of the late James Starr and Pluma Mae (Bricker) Hinshaw.

He was raised during the hard times of the Depression era and during this time Fort Leonard Wood took their family farm.  During his childhood, Buck (as he was known to his family and friends) professed his faith as a Christian and was baptized during summer camp.  He attended Wair Chapel Church.

As an early adult, Buck went to California to work at various jobs.  He also worked in the Rocky Mountains as a sheepherder.  Later he returned to Missouri where he met Mildred Gayle Edwards.  Rev. Knight in Stoutland, Missouri united them in marriage on November 21, 1954.  He and Gayle were blessed with three children: David Lynn, Vicki Jo, and Janie Sue.  They resided on Glaize Creek and made their life farming.

In 1974 they sold their farm and moved to Stoutland.  He then worked for Brackett Farms.  He and son David also had a trail ride at Bagnel Dam in the late 1970s.  In his spare time, Buck enjoyed hunting, fishing and horseback riding.  He was an expert at shoeing horses.

Buck was a gentle and loving husband and father.  He was devoted to and very proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Even the small children around town adopted him as their Papa Buck.

Buck passed away at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2009 at his home at the age of 79 years.

Buck will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered by his wife: Mildred Gayle Hinshaw of the home; three children: David Lynn Hinshaw and wife, Annette, Vicki Jo Neal and husband, Jerry, and Janie Sue Marshall and husband, Troy all of Stoutland; three siblings: Viney Barker of Hamilton, Ohio, Darwin Hinshaw of Ouray, Co. and Pluma Mae Porter of Ala.; four grandchildren: James Edward Cornelison and wife Alissa, Amy Lynne Hinshaw, Amanda Marie Hinshaw and Adam Mikel Henson; two great grandchildren: Emilie Elizabeth Starr Hinshaw and Emma Jo Cornelison; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Buck was preceded in death by four siblings: Mabel Hinshaw Lewis, Wesley, Sylvester and Jack Hinshaw.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2009 in the Memorial Chapel of Richland with Rev. John Peterson and David West officiating.  Recorded music selections chosen were Two Sparrows in a Hurricane and Go Rest High on that Mountain.  Amy Lynne Hinshaw shared many precious memories about her beloved grandfather.  Serving as escorts were Randy Lewis, Estill Clay, Fred Bloch, Christopher Bloch, Anthony Lawrence and Mikel Henson.

Burial followed in the Wair Chapel / Dowdy Cemetery near Richland.  Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of James Starr Buck Hinshaw and may be left at the funeral home.
