Darwin Lee Hinshaw Lewis Darwin Lee Hinshaw Lewis, age 70, passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at his home in Montrose, Colo. He fought a long and hard battle with Agent Orange from the Vietnam War. It had caused diabetes, heart disease, lung disease and many other health problems.
Darwin Lee Lewis was born in Stoutland, Mo., to James Starr and Verba Cromer Hinshaw. After a hard childhood, he moved to Colorado and was adopted by his sister Mabel (Sally) Lewis and husband Robert Kenneth Lewis. He was 14 years old and started to get caught up on his education, graduating from Ridgway High School in 1962. He left that summer to go to college at Van Nuys, Calif., for veterinary school. After one semester, he had decided he wanted to marry the love of his life and friend, Sharon Morlang. They were married on Dec. 23, 1962. He was so excited about the 50th wedding anniversary due this year. Sharon was the daughter of Henry and Lois Morlang, and to their union were born three children.
Darwins experience as a heavy equipment operator in Vietnam as a sea bee in the Navy helped in getting jobs at the Morrow Point Dam, Rifle Gap Dam and the water line from Buena Vista to Colorado Springs, Blue Mesa Dam. He then decided he was ready to help build the Trans-Alaska pipeline. The family moved to Valdez, Alaska, in 1976 and stayed during the building and the start-up crew of the first oil to come from the north slope of Alaska to Valdez. He was one of five men assigned to catch the first barrel of oil for the city of Valdez celebration. It was a big event with the townspeople waiting and the sirens blowing! That was a great accomplishment for the city and to be a part of. He was hired as a foreman to work in the power house and boarding of the ships. After a few years, a heavy jack fell from the truck onto Darwin and broke his back. He had three back surgeries and hept working where he was put in charge of rebuilding the berth arm. He was the boss over about 300 men that were to weld and repair the arms. After that job was completed in 1984, he had to have two more surgeries, and the Alyesha Pipleine Service Company gave him a medical retirement. He really loved the job and hated to be retired. He tried moving to Mexico to be close to his parents, but it was too laid back and there was nothing to do. The family moved back to Alaska, where the fishing was great and the friends were many. This time, the family settled in Seldovia, Alaska, where the weather was milder and the king salmon were 50 to 60 pounds. He caught the biggest salmon that summer that was 64 pounds.
Darwin was the best husband, best father, best grandfather and best friend anyone could ask for. The family did many adventures like going to every state in the union and taking a trip to Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan and Singapore. It was a 21-day trip, and by the time they arrived in Hong Kong, Darwin was willing to pay $100 for a McDonalds hamburger (which he didnt even like).
Darwin is survived by his wife, Sharon Lewis of Montrose, Colo.; children, Robbie Kay Lewis Monson and husband Josh of Montrose, Robert Kenneth Lewis of Phoenix, Ariz., and Nancy Lee Lewis Peterson and husband Eric of Waterford, Conn. There are seven grandchildren and five living, Steven Keith Jones of Grand Junction, Colo., Wesley Darwin Lewis of Sommerville, Mass., Emily Lewis of Phoenix, Ariz., and Arianna Peterson and Madalyn Peterson of Waterford, Conn.; sister, Freda Wick and husband Gary of Grand Junction, Colo.; brothers, Roy and Junior Cromer of Missouri; nephew, David Hinshaw; and his best friends, Cass Stanislawski and wife Betty; and constant companion, Cowboy, a Jack Russell terrier.
He was preceded in death by his real dad and mom; adopted parents; two grandchildren, Amanda Nicole Jones and Andrew Jones; and several brothers, Wesley Hinshaw, James Buck Hinshaw, Sylvester Hinshaw and Jack Hinshaw.
A visitation for family and friends will held on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors. A funeral service will held on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors.
