Robert was shown in the 1910 census (Apr 16 1910), living with his parents on East Street, Carthage, Ripley Township, Rush County, Indiana:7

Hinshaw, Robert, son, age 21, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Kentucky; single; occupation: bill clerk, railroad.

He married Mary Margaret Walls, Jul 14 1911, Henry County, Indiana.2,3,12  Mary, daughter of William Franklin Walls & Josie Elizabeth Benbow, was born Oct 19 1892.2,3,13  

The Hinshaws had been neighbors of Mary Wall's grandfather back in Randolph County, North Carolina.2  

It is believed that Robert either left/abandoned Mary or they were divorced, shortly after Mary contracted tuberculosis.14  Mary died May 9 1917, Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana; age 24.2,13,15  

On Jun 9 1917 Robert Hinshaw, age 28, registered for the World War I draft in Rush County, Indiana.  He declared he was born July 30th 1888 in Carthage, Indiana, and was then still residing in Carthage, occupied as a telegraph operator.  He declared he was single, with dependents father, mother and 1 child.  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, blue eyes, dark brown hair.8  

Robert was shown in the 1920 census (Jan 10 1920), living with his parents on Henley Street, Carthage, Ripley Township, Rush County, Indiana:9

Hinshaw, Robert E., son, age 32, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Kentucky; widower; occupation: laborer, boxboard mill.

He then married Leona May Ruddell, Jun 25 1921.4,5,16  Leona was born Apr 12 1893, Rushville, Rush County, Indiana.10,17,18,19

Robert and Leona were shown in the 1930 census (Apr 2 1930), living with Leona's widowed mother, 411 W. Fifth St., Rushville, Rush County, Indiana:17

On Oct 9 1939, Robert applied for a Social Security number.  His application shows he and his wife, Leona May Ruddell, lived at 532 North Jackson Street, Rushville, Indiana.  He was unemployed at the time of his application.4

Hinshaw, Leona, wife, age 46, born in Indiana; completed 1 year of high school; on Apr 1 1935 was living in the same house; occupation: bookkeeper, bank; worked 52 weeks in 1939; $900 wages in 1939.
Hinshaw, Laura, mother, age 77, born in Kentucky; completed 8th grade; on Apr 1 1935 was living in Carthage, Rush County, Indiana; widow.

On Apr 27 1942 Robert E. Hinshaw, age 53, registered for the World War II draft in Rushville, Rush County, Indiana.  He declared he was born July 30 1888 in Rush [county], Indiana, and was then residing at 532 N. Jackson in Rushville, employed by the U.S. Army Ordinance Dept.  He declared his relative/contact was Leona R. Hinshaw of the same address.  He was recorded as 5'6" tall, 150 lbs., blue eyes, brown hair, medium complexion, and "Appendix scar. Scar in left palm.".11  

Leona died Jan 31 1984, Rushville, Rush County, Indiana; buried Section 9, East Hill Cemetery, 704 E. State Road 44, Rushville, Rush County, Indiana.16,18,19  

In 1986 Robert was living in Rushville, Rush County, Indiana.18  

Robert E. Hinshaw died Mar 10 1986, Rushville, Rush County, Indiana; buried Section 9, East Hill Cemetery, 704 E. State Road 44, Rushville, Rush County, Indiana.16,18,21  

Robert's obituary appeared in the "Rushville Republican" on Tuesday, March 11, 1986, as follows:16

ROBERT E. HINSHAW

Robert E. Hinshaw, 97, 206 E. Eighth Street, Rushville, died Monday morning in his home.  

Born July 31, 1888 in Carthage, he was the son of William Nathan and Laura Judy Hinshaw.  He was married June 25, 1921, to Leona R. Ruddell who died Jan. 31, 1984.  

He was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge 62 and American Legion Post 150.  He was a veteran of World War I.  He had lived in Rush County all of his life.  From 1949-1969, he served as the Rushville Justice of Peace.  

Survivors include two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  

Private funeral services will be hald 10 a.m. Thursday in the Wyatt-Moore Mortuary with the Rev. E. David Frazier officiating.  Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery.  

Friends may call in the mortuary Wednesday from 2-8 p.m.
