After his mother died in 1917 when Richard was only 5 years old, (and his father having abandoned the family), he went to live with his grandparents, William F. Walls (who was formerly Wall) and Josie Benbow Walls.  When he became a teenager, he legally changed his name to Richard Walls.7  

Richard was shown in the 1920 census (Jan 26 1920), living with his maternal grandparents, 237 N. Franklin Street, Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana:2

Walls, Josie E, wife, age 54, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; occupation: house keeper.
