According to family folklore, John and his mother traveled to Kansas about 1874,10

He married Pearl Valetta Richardson, Oct 13 1895, Salina, Kansas.1,6,9  Pearl, daughter of Benjamin Frank Richardson & Mahala Thomas6,8,9, was born Nov 13 18726,8,9 [Nov - 18742,3,4,7], Brookville, Kansas6,8,9.  

John was listed in the 1897-98 city directory of Salina, Saline County, Kansas; his occupation was shown as "tinner".10  He was again listed in the 1904-05 edition, where his advertisement lists roofing, spouting, sheet iron and tin work.10
