Ernest returned to Englewood before marrying Lucy. He then bought a cedar creek farm. Farming was his passion and he stayed with it all his life. It was necessary to seek additional income, thus he also worked for Boone County National Bank for twenty-plus years, managing the Walnut Street branch.13

Ernest and Lucy also owned and operated the Englewood general store in the late 1930's and early 1940's. The store was then sold and a second farm was purchased east of Englewood. After war-time work with General Cable in St. Louis, the family returned to this farm.13

Lucy May Hinshaw died Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Boone Hospital Center. She was 99.
She was born September 24, 1907, in Callaway County to James Lorenzo and Carolina Levina Clatterbuck. In 1930, she married E.R. "Cherry" Hinshaw.
For many years, Mrs. Hinshaw and her husband lived near Cedar Creek and the community of Englewood. There, Mrs. Hinshaw helped establish the Englewood Club and clubhouse. She was also a long-time member of New Salem Baptist Church.
Known to family and friends as "Mama Lu," Mrs. Hinshaw said that to live in the hearts of others is not to die. She said she wanted people not to think of her as gone, but simply in another room and with them always.
She is survived by her daughter, Connie F. Waers, of Osage Beach; one son, Fred Hinshaw, of Columbia; two granddaughters, Lucy Cunningham, of Shawnee, Kan., and Laura Ingram, of Leawood, Kan.; two grandsons, Joseph Waers Jr., of Shawnee, Kan., and Todd Waers, of Sacramento, Calif.; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband and one grandson died earlier.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. on Friday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be at New Salem Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donorís choice. Online tributes may be left at memorialfuneralhomeandcemetery.com.

Lucy May Hinshaw, 99, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Boone Hospital Center. Services will be held on Friday, May 4, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at New Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home. Lucy May was born September 24, 1907, in Callaway County, the daughter of the late James Lorenzo and Carolina Levina Clatterbuck. She was united in marriage to E.R. (Cherry) Hinshaw in 1930. He preceded her in death in 1971.
Lucy May grew up and resided for many years near Cedar Creek and the community of Englewood. She was instrumental in establishing the Englewood Club and Club House. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a long time member of New Salem Baptist Church.
Lucy was "Mama Lu" to all her family and later in life many of her friends also called her Mama Lu. Lucy said that to live in the hearts of others is not to die and wanted everyone to not think of her as gone, but simply in another room and with us always.
Survivors include her daughter, Connie F. Waers and husband Joseph Allen, Sr. of Osage Beach, MO; son, Fred Hinshaw and wife Janet of Columbia, MO; grandchildren, Lucy Denise Cunningham and husband Scott of Shawnee, KS, Joseph Allen Waers, Jr. and wife Candice of Shawnee, KS, Todd Hinshaw Waers and wife Lora of Sacramento, CA, and Laura Jean Ingram and husband Grant of Leawood, KS; great grandchildren, Brett and Callie Ingram, Danielle Heinisch, Bennett, Morgan and Joseph Allen III Waers; great-great grandchildren, Lucy Ann and Austin Michael Heinisch. Lucy May came from a family of eight children, all of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Frederick Clayton Hinshaw.
