Born Jan 27 1880, London, Middlesex, England.2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11  Christened May 11 1880, St. Paul, Bedford, Bedfordshire.6  

According to family oral history, William had a falling out with his father and as a result he added an 'e' to the end of Henshaw as a way to separate himself from his father.2  

William immigrated to the U.S., arriving in New York (Ellis Island) on Apr 24 1906 on the ship S.S. New York, having departed Southampton, England on Apr 14 1906.2,7  His immigration record listed his age as 26, occupation as 'painter'.2,7  His residence was listed as Bedford7 and his final destination was with a friend, Fred Stafford, of 108 Grand View Ave., North Braddock, Pennsylvania.2,7  (He was also recorded as not a criminal, insane, a polygamist or anarchist).7  

He married Phoebe Betts, about 1907.2,5,12  Phoebe, daughter of Joseph Betts & Mary Ann Bird, was born about 1879, Shambrook, England.4,5,7  

Phoebe had immigrated to the U.S., arriving in New York (Ellis Island) on Jun 8 1907 on the ship S.S. St. Louis, having departed Southampton, England on Jun 3 1907.  Her immigration record shows her as age 27, occupation "maid".  It also shows her reason for immigrating was to be married to Mr. W.A. Henshawe, 108 Grand View, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.  She was recorded as 5' 2" tall, fair complexion, fair hair, grey eyes.2,7  

William and family were shown in the 1910 census (Apr 25 1910), 216 Bloomer Ave., East Pittsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania:5

In 1914 William was living at 1110 Mill St., Wilkensburg, Pennsylvania.7  

On Sep 12 1918 William Arthur Henshawe, age 38, registered for the World War I draft in Wilkensburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.  He declared he was born January 27th 1880, a naturalized citizen, and was then residing at 1609 Coal St., Wilkensburg where he was a house painter employed by J. Werner + Son Painters of East Liberty, Pennsylvania.  He declared his nearest relative was Mrs. W. Henshawe of the same address.  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, brown eyes, dark hair.8  

William and family were shown in the 1920 census (Jan 2 1920), 1609 Coal Street, Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania [census page very difficult to read]:3

In 1942 William Arthur Henshawe, age 62, registered for the World War II draft.  He declared he was born Jan 27 1880 in London, England, and was then residing at 1609 Coal Street, Wilkinsburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania (telephone Penhurst 4048) where he was a self-employed house painter.  He declared his relative contact was Mrs. Phoebe Henshaw of the same address.9  

William Arthur Henshaw died 1949, Roaring Spring, Blair County, Pennsylvania; buried Roaring Spring Cemetery, Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania.2  

William's obituary mentions that he left "by his wife, Phoebe Betts Henshawe, one daughter Mrs. Phoebe Smeltzer of Pittsburgh; two sons, Arthur and Ernest, of Wilkinsburg; one brother, G. M. Henshawe of Albany, N. Y.; several brothers and sisters in England and Australia..."2  

Phoebe died 1964.2
