Born Sep 24 1895, Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana.1,5,6  (Sep - 1894).7  

He married Alta Rickard.3  Alta was born about 1898, Michigan.1  (c1896).2  

On Jun 5 1917 Merl R. Hinshaw, age 22, registered for the World War I draft in Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana.  He declared he was born September 24 1895 in Winchester, Indiana, and was then residing at 427 S. High St. in Winchester where he had a wife and child, and was a clerk in the Harden Store, employed by Magee Harden Co. of Winchester.  He claimed an exemption due to "support of wife + child".  He was recorded as medium height, medium build, gray eyes, dark brown hair.5  

Merle and family were shown in the 1920 census (Jan 8 1920), Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana:1

Hinshaw, Merl, head-of-household, age 24, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in United States; rented home; occupation: salesman, hardware.
Hinshaw, Alta C., wife, age 22, born in Michigan; father born in Michigan; mother born in Indiana.
Hinshaw, James C., son, age 3, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Michigan.
Hinshaw, Howard, son, age 1, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Michigan.
Living nearby in 1920 were Merle's parents and family.8  

Merl apparently died before 1944, as he was not mentioned in his father's 1944 obituary.9  He probably died between 1920 and 1930.10  

Alta remarried c1930 to Riley G. Lovell2 (George Riley Lovell).5  Riley had been previously married to a Hannah --,5,11,12 by whom he had a daughter, Effie M. Lovell.11  

Alta and family were shown in the 1930 census (Apr 5 1930), White River Township, Randolph County, Indiana:2

Lovell, Riley, head-of-household, age 54, born in Indiana; parents born in Indiana; first married at age 54; owned home ($2,000 value); radio in home; occupation: laborer, glass factory; not a war veteran.
Lovell, Alta C., wife, age 34, born in Michigan; father born in Michigan; mother born in Indiana; first married at age 19.
Hinshaw, James, step-son, age 13, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Michigan; attended school.
Hinshaw, Howard, step-son, age 10, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Michigan; attended school.
Hinshaw, Helen, step-daughter, age 8, born in Indiana; father born in Indiana; mother born in Michigan; attended school.
Living next door in 1930 was the family of Dewey William Hinshaw.13
