On Sep 12 1918 Frederick Perry Hancher, age 34, registered for the World War I draft in Decatur, Adams County, Indiana.  He declared he was born May 17th 1884, and was then residing at 208 So. 2nd Avenue, Decatur.  He declared his nearest relative was Anna Eva Hancher of the same address.  He was recorded as medium height, stout, blue eyes, brown hair.7

Decatur lady is fatally injured Friday night in wreck east of this city

Adams county recorded its seventh traffic fatality of 1968 Friday night, and third in the past 16 days, when a Decatur lady, Mrs. Fred P. (Anna) Hancher, 86, of 516 Jefferson St., was fatally injured in a one-car accident approximately one mile east of Decatur on U.S. highway 224.  

Adams county now has recorded six traffic deaths in the county and one within the city limits of Decatur.  

Mrs. Hancher, whose husband is a Decatur barber, died at 11:10 p.m. at the Adams county memorial hospital.  She received a crushed chest in the mishap that occurred at 9:30 p.m. just east of the Blue Flame Gas building.  

Hancher, 84, the driver of the car, was injured in the accident and was taken to the Adams county memorial hospital, where he was listed in "fair" condition this morning.  Hancher received lacerations to the scalp, right eyebrow, right ear and right hand.  

Car Hits Abutment

According to the accident report, Hancher was westbound on U.S. highway 224, whe the car he was driving went off the right side of the road, striking a bridge abutment.  The car then landed on its wheels in an open ditch.  Mrs. Hancher was thrown from the auto.  

Damages to Hancher's 1957 model car were estimated at $250.  

The Adams county sheriff's department and the Indiana state police investigated the mishap.  

Born in Willshire

The accident victim was born in Willshire, O., July 24 1881, a daughter of John and Nancy Roop-Schafner, and was married to Fred P. Hancher in 1905.  Mrs. Hancher was highly active in church and social circles in Decatur.  

She was a member of the First United Methodist church and the WSCS of the church.  She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Historical club, Pythian sisters, the Civic department of the Decatur Woman's club, the Garden club and the Rebekah lodge.  

Surviving are her husband, one daughter, Mrs. John (Margaret) Brecht of Decatur; one son, Paul W. Hancher of Elnora, N. Y.; one brother, Paul Schafner of Willshire; three sisters, Mrs. William (Ruth) Keller of Decatur, Mrs. George (Selma) Price and Mrs. Carl (Esther) Lotter, both of Fort Wayne; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  Two brothers are deceased.  

The body was removed to the Winteregg-Linn funeral home.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending arrival of the son.

Anna's funeral was announced in the "Decatur Daily Democrat" (Decatur, Indiana) on Monday, June 24, 1968:10

Funeral Tuesday for Mrs. Hancher

Funeral services for Mrs. Anna E. Hancher, of 516 West Jefferson street, who was fatally injured in a one-auto accident near Decatur Friday night, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist church; Rev. Melvin Seeger will officiate, and burial will be in the Decatur cemetery.  

Friends may call at the Winteregg-Linn funeral home until 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.  The body will lie in state at the church from 12 noon Tuesday until time of the services.  The condition of husband, Fred P. Hancher, driver of the car, was reported as fair today at the Adams county memorial hospital.

FREDERICK P. HANCHER, 90, a well-known Decatur resident who was a barber in this city for 60 years, died at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday at the Adams County Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient one day.  Mr. Hancher, who resided in Decatur for 64 years, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, where he had been a past master and a 50-year member: Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shrine and Order of Eastern Star.  A former resident of 516 Jefferson St., Mr Hancher died following an extended illness.  

Born in Elwood (Indiana) on May 17, 1884, he was a son of Philander and Scioto Watkins-Hancher, and was united in marriage in 1905 to Anna Schaffner, who preceded him in death on June 21, 1968.  

Surviving are two children, Mrs. John (Margaret) Brecht of Decatur, and Paul Hancher of Fort Wayne; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  One sister and one brother preceded him in death.  

Funeral Services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Methodist Church, with Rev Harold Leininger officiating.  Burial will be in the Decatur Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Winteregg-Linn and Haggard funeral home from 2 p.m. Thursday until 11 a.m. Friday, and then at the church from 12 noon until time of the service.  Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.  Preferred memorials are to the First United Methodist Church.
