Dec. 29, 2014
Melba Verna (Hinshaw) Patton passed away Dec. 29, 2014, at the age of 96. Melba was born near Boise, where she met her husband, Fred "Denny" Denham Patton. Together they moved to West Linn. When Denny was in a near-fatal accident at work, it was up to Melba to keep the family going until Denny could return to his job. Not wanting to leave her young daughters with strangers, she made a living by taking children into her home while their parents were at work. She was a popular babysitter, so there were always many children in the house. Melba was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Oregon City. She was predeceased by Denny in March 2002; sisters, Doris and Dixie; and brother, James. She is survived by her daughters, Francie Shoemaker and Carol Sweet; grandsons, Peter and Adrian Baxter; and granddaughter, Shanti Shoemaker. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at First Baptist Church, 819 John Adam St., Oregon City, OR 97045, 503-656- 3854.
