When she was nine years old, Dorothy's family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, and Dorothy then grew up in Marin County, California.1
Dorothy received a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford University (1962), and an M.A. (1965) and PhD. (1968) in Zoology from the University of California, Berkeley.1,3
She married Greg Patent.4,5 Greg was a fellow student.1

For the first few years after graduate school Dorothy worked as a scientist - two years of post-doctoral work (Sinai Hospital, Detroit, MI, and Stazzione Zoologica, Naples, Italy) and later several years teaching part-time night school at the University of Montana and full-time on the faculty for six months.1
Meanwhile, she began writing for children. Dorothy has written over 100 books for children, published by more than a dozen publishers. Her books have received the Golden Kite, Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and the Eva Gordon Award, American Nature Study Society.3 Dorothy began her career writing science and nature books for children about 1974, when she and her husband, Greg, and their two young children, moved to Missoula, Montana from North Carolina. Greg, who now writes regularly about food and cooking for the Missoulian and other publications, had gotten a job teaching zoology at the University of Montana.3,5
